Background of the Conference
The field of human services has a long history of focusing on an individual's deficits, problem behaviours, and pathologies. Within the last decade researchers and practitioners in the fields of education, mental health, psychology, social work and child welfare have begun to question the deficit-based approach and are moving towards a more holistic model of development. Rather than focusing on individual weaknesses or deficits, strength-based practitioners started to collaborate with the individual's to discover individual functioning and strengths. Collaborative exploration of strategies which focus on identifying internal, external, created and natural occurring resources becomes essential in choosing the interventions for youth. Strength based approaches can help individuals gain insight into their innate strengths, increasing resilience and improving their well-being. If we look at the flourishing field of life skills education, it largely focuses on the study and practicing a strategy of what is optimum in terms of well-being, strengths and virtues that make individuals succeed.
The 4th International Conference on Life Skills Education provides an opportunity for subject experts to present their latest findings and best practices. All attendees will have the opportunity to discuss and deliberate their research, insights and ideas in thematic sessions, symposia, panel discussion and also to interact with like-minded people who focus on studying optimising positive strengths through life skills. Here, the discussion would unfold innovative ideas to further improve the role of Life Skills Education in making these interventions more effective for the cause of social development.
